Coach Sariina Kalli’s Comments
We had crunchy, hard snow on the ground, and cold and windy conditions for a section meet a few years ago, but nothing like the 33 degrees and blowing snow we had in I’Falls Oct. 12. The weather certainly took its toll on our runners.
Despite the weather, or maybe because of it, the girls pulled out some strong performances on Thursday. Senior Jennifer Blodgett tied her personal record, PR, set in Bemidji earlier this year; while junior Carrie Fish cut 12 seconds of her PR. Freshman Jennie Buegler ran her fastest meet of this season and came within 9 seconds of her all-time best. Senior Madie Heinrich and sophomore Karlie Eaton each ran their second-fastest time of this year. The team placed fifth of nine mostly-Class AA schools.
Rainy River seventh grader Saragh Fraser dropped her two-mile time by 17 seconds, placing 2nd in the girls junior high race.
By the time the boys varsity/JV race started, snow was blowing sideways across the course so the times were understandably slower. While seniors Dylan Davis and Vincent Scott came within seconds of what they ran in Duluth last week, all other boys were well off times and places in this meet. The team placed 10th in a ten-team field.
It’s unrealistic to compare this race to any other race we had this year ˆ or in the last few years. I think the runners were prepared for the cold temperatures, but the cold wind and biting, blowing snow caught everyone by surprise ˆ especially in mid-October. Let‚s hope it‚s simply a cold snap, and not a preview of the rest of the season.
