Two weekends ago Brenley Anderson, a team captain and a native of Rainy River, was part of the Rainy River Voyageurs women’s hockey team that became national champions!
The Voyageurs represent Rainy River Community College in International Falls and had an amazing season; only to cap it off with a national championship win in Kalamazoo, Michigan two weeks ago.
The Voyageurs had a stellar showing at the championship tournament, losing only one game.
Their first game, Fri., Mar. 11, 8 p.m. was against the University of Connecticut. While UofC drew first blood with a goal at 11:23, the Voyageurs then took over scoring the next five goals. Anderson picked up her first goal of the tourney at 8:01 in the third period. The Voyageurs would win 5-2.
The next morning, Sat. Mar. 12, the team would notch their only loss to the team they would end up facing for the title later in the tournament, West Chester Univ. RRCC picked up the first goal and their only goal of the game at 11:19 in the first period. After that WCU would score four unanswered goals to win 4-1. It was a penalty ridden game with RRCC getting seven of the nine penalties, two of which were served by Anderson.
Sat. evening RRCC faced off against South Dakota State Univ. and won 3-2. Anderson scored two of the Voyageurs goals, one in the first and one in the third.
Sun., Mar. 13, at 3:35 p.m. the Voyageurs met West Chester Univ. in the championship game! But the game was the exact opposite of the earlier meeting when the Voyageurs lost. This time RRCC dominated scoring six unanswered goals! It was 4-0 after two. A goal by RRCC at 14:13 in the third period was then followed by a hat-trick by Anderson! WCU answered with one goal to spoil the shutout at 5:42. But the Voyageurs would win it 8-1!
